T-Ball Rules/Drills

Infielder Rule – EFFECTIVE SPRING 2020

All players must throw the ball and tag their respective bases. The pitcher must throw the ball to another base. He can run home to get an out ONLY.

KNOW YOUR RULES AND MINIMUM PLAY REQUIREMENTS

T-Ball Minimum Play Requirements:

  1. Each player MUST play a minimum of 1 defensive inning in the infield. IT MUST BE A COMPLETE INNING. NOT FOR JUST ONE OUT. 
  2. No player shall sit for consecutive innings.
  3. All players shall be in the batting line-up.

Five Goals for the 4-to-6 Age Group

1. Learning the Basic Rules   

  1. The right direction to run when the ball is hit
  2. Runners must touch the bases
  3. How to record outs (catch the ball in the air, throw to first, or tag the runners)
  4. Running past first base
  5. Scoring a run
  6. Three outs constitute an inning

2. Throwing Mechanics

  1. Turn the body so that the front shoulder points toward the target
  2. Keep the elbow above the shoulder
  3. Step toward the target with the non-throwing foot and release the ball.

3. Tracking 

  1. Follow the ball with the eyes to the glove, whether on the ground or in the air (use softer balls)
  2. Use two hands to catch and field
  3. Try to catch the ball out in front of the body.

4. Hitting

  1. How to hold and swing the bat
  2. Batting safety (when not to swing bats, wearing batting helmets)
  3. Hitting off a tee
  4. Hitting softly tossed pitches


5. Positional Play

  1. If the ball is hit to your buddy, let him or her field it (note to coach: try not to put more than 10 players on a field at a time)
  2. Covering bases
